Kola Nut

Kola nut is predominantly native to the tropical rainforests of Africa. It is gotten from the kola tree and it contains caffeine which serves as a flavoring ingredient in beverages. It is commonly known as “cola” and contains stimulants comprising about 2% caffeine and theobromine.

Kola nut has been listed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as generally safe for human consumption. Kola nut extract is classified as a natural food flavoring. The FDA has also approved kola extract as an inactive ingredient in certain pharmaceuticals.

In the western world, kola nut extract is used in the production of beverage drinks, energy drinks, cosmetics (e.g. beauty soaps and creams), chewing gums, sweets, etc In Nigeria and most West African Countries, kola nut is used as part of traditional hospitality, social ceremonies, culture, and rituals.

Does Coca Cola still use kola nut?

The Coca-Cola recipe is a closely guarded secret. But it's said to no longer contain kola nut extract, relying instead on artificial imitations to achieve the flavour.
